Many of the fairy tales we love most were originally written by the Brothers Grimm – many years before these tales were turned into successful Disney movies. The writers did everything they could to preserve the German myths and fables – and made them available to future generations. They did this primarily from a linguistic point of view, due to the fact that nothing was more interesting to them than the diversity of the German language.
Did you know that fairy tales such as “Rapunzel” or “Sleeping Beauty” were written by the Grimms? Apart from collecting fairy tales, they also wrote the first German dictionary, which included 23 volumes. Isn’t that amazing?
We are definitely very grateful that the brothers have preserved these beautiful tales for us. Imagine a world without “Snow White”? Even now, more than 200 years later, we still love reading about princes, princesses, kings and queens and everything that happens to them. As children, almost everyone of us has read the story of „Cinderella“, „Hansel and Gretel“ or „Little Red Riding Hood“. Most of us were allowed to watch movies like „Cinderella“ or „Sleeping Beauty“ – created by Disney.
Not all fairy tales were penned by the Grimms though – Peter Pan was written by Scottish Author Sir J.M Barrie and was turned into theater piece in 1904. By the way – did you know that “Beauty and the Beast” was originally called “Beauty and the Animal” and originates from a French folktale?
Yet, it is important that fairy tales stay modern and up-to-date, which is why artist J Scott Campbell decided to kick it up a notch and make our most beloved Disney princesses shine in a different light. The way he sees the modern Disney princess is not sweet, nice and innocent, but naughty and sexy.
